Twenty Pound Toes

The grinning pachyderm in the foyer
Wants to fall in love
The real kind with a reciprocal
Sinking cliché wrinkled and obtuse

So homogenous like chlorine in Burmese tap water
Name tags, for sale signs, and fishing tackle
Corks bobbing in store fronts
Last season’s fashion on clearance

Predictable Irish whiskey pubs sloshing
For darts and pull tabs rollicking with the tender
Bathroom graffiti with proper grammar and spelling
To impress

Uncut front lawn and herb garden in the rear courtyard
Shadowed pergola with the vines on creep
Sentiments of fire and the schoolyard children over the fence
Gazing out an upstairs window, glancing at my wrist

Grumbling stomach, got to go clean the kitchen
Counters sauced, oven’s caked
Roaches scrambling with the light

Feeling like I bought a house three times too damn big!
