Dirty Mirror

Kidding myself morning after morning, recycling and already older
Aging done and the dust comes pouring out my mouth, nostrils, eyeballs and hair
Every sunrise I stare in the mirror
The resignation maps in as all of this has danced too long in my rhythm

To where there is only standing, shifting inches and promises holding
Misty sand dehydrated plans of withered roots
Reaching figures across evacuated bedrooms and the sentiment of preferable loneliness
The sight of possibility is a twister in the heartland, barometric chaos in Nebraska

Helicopters are the only escape and whirlybirds get flipped like mustangs
Running for their lives as the suburban sprawl creeps West
Knowing the Olive Garden and the Lowes will leave nothing left
For the colts to eat that’s green, just gritty nubs of yellowing gray to clean

The surface until the whole Earth rubs raw against teeth and seeps into the jaw
Wanders through the mandible into the brain, neurons start adapting, the serotonin stops
And the insane becomes sane; the concrete starts looking good to eat
The rocks, the grit and the pasture is a memory of Freudian slips

Beneath the masquerade that younglings ever attended the valley parades
Migrating stallions and broke-back hills, the fishing holes are calling and nothing will
Replace the taste of the snow-melted water or the springs from the depression
Rising out of winter into hearts of common-drink

Bought and sold and the fare to pass is too much for a common-man
The grit blankets the rest; ask a question and the sounds exhaust in the very air consuming them
To traverse from one’s larynx to another’s cochlea; the hammer never rings the anvil
The riders have booted ever stirrup raping the bare skin until normalized

Like parents yelling at drivers ahead for moving too slow so that their engine sits idle
At a traffic light, late for work and child at home for the summer with no one to play with
In another city, days shrinking like raisins bagged up and never eaten
The sit-down cereal milk is rarely poured upon the grain that is grown

The seed has its own commercial genetics and nature has been told to go home
To another planet as if she was a spouse who was told she is no longer welcome in this marriage
Humanity has moved in with our mistress and the kids have come along
Mother is wailing out there in the badlands looking for the heart right now

Slap the water from the sink upon my face; spread this resin texture in my hair
Get through another walking-mummy sequence and pay the price I’ve already paid
The engine starting in the garage questioning pulling out
Earn a living to give it away; see the glow in the others that still have a chance to run
The recognition eludes in the novel of what has not become

The dust-dance with the devils of crackling-romance, the zombie-children of vagabond graves
The highways of Sisyphus-stone Sundays pushing the rock seeing it roll back upon toes
Knowing what comes next as the story goes written before and written again
Sunk in the gut of the difference between real and to pretend

That phone call is going to come; that girl is going to show up
The bicycle won’t have that accident each time the play is rerun
Bent up back from the smashed-in truck, busted teeth and no shrine to build
The blood drains across the sidewalk as the grass covers up the salvageable in a mother’s milk

The front yards of the neighbors arouse with the noise, hear the screaming
To bring their own children inside; to avoid the commotion of another body about to die
The St. Augustine lawn withers in the sun as the whole community turtle-heads-in
Only to see the real estate agents run to some city further and further out

The chasm is quaking as the urban blight eats the stomach out
Of a city like a Somali refuge’s bulging abdomen on a dusty highway
Walking and National Geographic takes a picture for the world to stare
And say, “Ain’t that sad. Here’s a quarter,” as we take a sip of a Bud or a Coke or toke another Marlboro

Man on his horse, lasso and looking the part, rugged and tall, bandana and called
To reign in the grazing lands with fence posts, owned by the bank with God notes
Navaho, Sioux, Cherokee all set to gamble on the science of yellow fever blankets
And bullets against bison and saddled up horse meat

One is one’s purpose fishing the stream, but when the water is gone
Even the fish can be heard screaming stacked like pauper-flapping audience members
To the heated global parade, the paper mill’s poisons dumped rather than caged

The animal’s urine made by a machine, the animal’s breath from a smokestack
The animal’s sight from a camera catching the red-light runners
The animal’s fur falling out foaming on drugs to grow it back
Another to get the blood flowing and the penis on track

Dust-man glaring retinas reflecting the inverse and it could always be worse
Round about mantra echoing in the head, when does the answer comes back
Better off, better off ….
Never

Crawfish Holes of Muddy Silence

I feel like the world is screaming at me to be silent,
“Quit making everything so difficult!”
The layers are caking on with the years in a lexicon of short-temper
Run burned as engine oil fuming on the side of the road

Of an abandoned vehicle, no hitch-hiking entertained
Only vagabond walk-a-thon of a man rambling alongside the highway
Like Woody Guthrie knowing no one is listening but the universe
The ant hills kicked and the interstate signs reading miles to go

The trees reach like hope in the darkness to see morning’s light
Swaying southern pines for promises that the hurricane’s sway
Will not snap trunks like twigs knowing promises are
Like toilet paper stock issued by corporate salesmen

Spend all these hours evaluating truth finding numerical lubrication
To how the trading houses make their bank before the numbers are even blessed
The world turns over the idea in rummaged luggage ten thousand times
Predestined on the sentiment of up or down, never is enough ever enough

Or enough ever matter, just the direction of a man’s energy up or down
Rising or falling, faster or slower, kill him before he becomes a nuisance
A drain upon the ledger, cancerous tumor to the cache of the beautiful
Traded a million in a second based on an algorithm of what is thought to be

Rather than is and I see how my words are burning in a feckless pyre
None of it matters, soul asleep and bodies incinerated for CAFO grease
I see the traffic accidents and the carcass metal ramming into one after the other
Never knowing why the one up front slammed the breaks or punched the accelerator

As if the men at the front of the line are just toying with all those behind
Compressing and expanding the space of what it means to make ends meet
Or have the luxury to breathe or drink or sleep under a roof with one’s children
I ponder it all and the words never leave me alone

Stalking me like wolves at all that I am unable to do or say or know or dismiss
As something no man should ever pray to a sky and I, and I
Am left dumbfounded in a ditch of mosquitos and crawfish burrowing in mud turrets
With a machine gun of lyrics I probably will just keep to myself

Set the ammunition on fire in the deteriorating time of my youth
Dying inside that I had to choose, between expressing a flawed concept that had some kernel
Of truth, but was wary of what others would think, would say, would make me turn around
And betray the voice inside that said, “Do not hide.  Do not fear. Love enough that there might be something here worth saving, worth saying, worth sharing, worth the daring to be a man in full and not another pedestrian gawking and saying nil.  Be the other.”

Today, today the fear is high.  The silence is berating me to expire.
The armor is thin and I am so tired.  Give up the militant defiance for a peaceful acquiescence
To the will of the machine and I will be the dirtiest version of clean.

Buoy

I can hardly stand; head is bobbing like a buoy
Off the neck, sawed off like a shotgun, half-departed
Fog-filled Monday, morning is pondering the grave of Woody Guthrie
All these papers on my desk could burn into the numb

Nothing left to start the week with, apologies in the bin
Smoked the purpose I had in a fury of strands
Traction, pedal faster, tumor of yesterdays claws in dirt-blood
Forming concrete mixing the dust must

Harden sometime, so I guess this morning is it
Wanted more time, don’t we all, in the end, it is never enough
Mother says, “Son, you think you know everything, but you don’t.”
Son says, “Mama, I don’t, but no one is offering answers?”

Give me a cross and an emaciated wonder-kid baring ribs and souls
Saying look what he did, for me, for us, for all time I see none
I see nothing, feel nothing, sense nothing, and when I did
I look back on it like a highway to a ditch on a drug trip

Hallucinating happiness for a closet case of emperor’s stitching
Oohing and aahing at the fabric until Santa Claus tilts the children’s scales
Another drug, another lie and all I want is truth
Books can be dangerous, but I am still reading

And you can say, “Oh my lord, yes you do.  Son you don’t mean that.”
Tell me to believe and you crush the last part of my heart
Brother, tell me I’d be a horrible therapist, you’re probably right
Never understood a damn-soul in this world, I’m just trying to start and end with me

Somebody has to understand me and rather put my faith in science
Boundless time, concentric universes, thinkers, ration
Then the gut-stripping, mind-ripping realization that God does exist
Never have I pondered a thought so cruel

The powerful ambivalent to the powerless, hungering for justice yet doing nil
I rather shed pursuit of or traditional definition of justice, conclusion as a destination
Rather than a reverberating end in itself, subtract such notions of happiness
As if the self is relevant or even exists in the now

I volley we are as always beyond the limits of volition so that I prefer to see
Life as it is rather than what scroll-writers dictate it to be to appease the succession of kingdoms

Give me no kingdoms; give me no kings
Give me no scale; give me no gilded-rings
Give me no solace; give me no faith
Wipe the illusion of something to look forward to

For the glory of a now, empowered by time disguised as a day
This waking and sleeping, this counting, this waiting, this learning
This feeding, this reproducing, this costumed dance parading around love
Call the ballet of nature, the hull of the ship’s ego an interconnected one

Give me the wage earned and given away, for it is always given
Give me the food grown and fed to the animals, for it is always eaten
Give me the dreams of energetic for doing, for energy is always transferred
Give me the love for truth, for it is true whether witnessed or not

Sometimes I feel like I want to get in a fight
I missed out on the anger of my teenage years
I missed out on the fucking up of my twenties,
I did the fucking up my thirties in my twenties,

I am doing the fucking up of my forties in my thirties now,
And I just want a chance to go back and get those twenties back
Maybe I could have avoided all of this or learned something
Or found something, somebody to watch fail with me

Side by side decay and do we die, the pointlessness wanders through the room
With a name-tag no one reads; I keep searching through all the faces
All I see are faces playing games, fooling their bodies into manufacturing activity
Something to do in the meantime, truncating asking questions, being so declarative

Mother sees me as one of those, as if her son ever uses periods
I’ve been an interrogative since birth and I do not think anyone has ever felt like an answer
Punctuation periods everywhere and all I gather is that periods do not exist
Religion, careers, possessions, traveling, reading, writing, nature’s gaze, music, on and on

None of it will ever be a declarative and it is not meant to be; it can not
I am at peace with that, and so much of my struggle is finding peace with others calling the others
Answers and shutting my mouth as that child standing observing the parade of emperor fashion
I would rather be a disconnected buoy watching it all; anchored to nothing, being inquisitive
To wherever time takes me
